Indonesia is reportedly moving toward a major defence modernization initiative that includes the potential procurement of the Chinese-made Chengdu J-10CE multirole fighter aircraft. According to defence-related sources, the proposed deal could involve the acquisition of 42 fighter jets under a package valued at approximately 9 billion US dollars.

A preliminary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was reportedly signed between China and Indonesia on 15 October 2025. However, as of April–May 2026, the agreement has not yet been finalized, with negotiations still ongoing over pricing, delivery schedules, and technical specifications.

Package and Cost Structure

While the base unit cost of a J-10CE fighter jet is estimated to be around 60 million US dollars, the proposed package reportedly includes logistics support, pilot and technical training, weapons integration, and long-term maintenance. As a result, the average unit cost under the full package could rise significantly, depending on final contractual terms.

Strategic Implications

If finalized, Indonesia would become the third operator of the J-10CE outside China, following Pakistan. Defence analysts suggest that such a deal would mark a significant milestone in China’s defence export capabilities and could further reshape regional air power dynamics in Southeast Asia.

Current Air Force Inventory

Indonesia’s current air combat fleet includes a mix of Western and Russian-origin aircraft such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon, Sukhoi Su-30, Sukhoi Su-27, and Dassault Rafale. These platforms are gradually being considered for replacement or modernization as part of Indonesia’s long-term air force development strategy.

J-10CE Capabilities

The J-10CE, developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, is classified as a 4.5-generation multirole combat aircraft. It features modern avionics, AESA radar technology, and advanced electronic warfare systems. The aircraft is powered by the WS-10B engine in its newer variants.

It is also capable of deploying advanced beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles such as the PL-15 missile, which significantly enhances its long-range combat capability.

Regional Impact

Analysts believe that if the deal moves forward, it could influence the balance of air power in Southeast Asia. The introduction of advanced Chinese fighter jets into Indonesia’s fleet may also intensify regional defence competition and further diversify the country’s military procurement strategy.
